B. Exposure Control Plan

  1. Exposure Control Plan
    An exposure control plan must include a detailed schedule of implementation as follows:
    1. Hepatitis B Vaccination records for all Category I & Category II employees (see previous section)
    2. Post-exposure procedures
      1. The employee must stop what s/he is doing and administer first aid
      2. Immediately report the exposure incident to the employer or Safety Manager
    3. Post-exposure follow-up:
      1. Following a report of an exposure incident, the employer shall make immediately available to the exposed employee a confidential medical evaluation and follow-up, including at least the following elements:
        1. Send employee to Health Care Professional (HCP) with:
        2. A copy of the BBP Standard.
        3. The completed Incident report.
        4. Employee’s Hepatitis B vaccination status.
        5. Employers Workers compensation Insurance information.
      2. Follow-up from health care professional (urgent care)
        1. Evaluates Exposure Incident.
        2. Arranges for testing of employee and source individual (if agreeable)
        3. Notifies employee of results of all testing.
        4. Provides post-exposure prophylaxis
    4. Record keeping
      1. Within seven days of the exposure incident the HCP sends Written Opinion (only) to employer:
      2. Documentation that employee was informed of evaluation results and the need for further follow-up.
      3. Whether Hepatitis B vaccine is indicated and if vaccine was received.
      4. Provides copy of HCP’s Written Opinion to employee and a copy is kept in the employees CONFIDENTIAL medical record.
      5. Within 14 days of the exposure incident the employer must investigate the exposure incident and complete a “SHARPS INJURY LOG” form.
