Section 8: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Course Progress

NOTE: Sections 8 – 12 will be extensively covered in the clinical application session of the course. What follows is an overview of the key terms and concepts from each section so that you will be prepared to apply them to the dental office, and thereby fulfill the requirements of this course.

As part of their daily responsibilities, DHCP come in contact with potentially infectious material. As discussed in previous sections, this can occur through patient blood, saliva, droplets, OPIM, and aerosols. In order to protect from infection, all DHCP are required to wear items designed to protect them, and their patients, from disease. These items must be provided at no cost to the employee by their employer and laundered (as applicable) according to OSHA guidelines. If PPE is damaged in anyway and rendered ineffective, the employer is responsible to repair or replace as necessary.  Uniforms and scrubs are NOT considered PPE. Scrubs and uniforms are considered general work attire.

Contaminated PPE should NEVER be worn outside of patient care areas (clinical settings, laboratories, instrument processing/sterilization areas).

The selection of PPE is determined by the procedures being preformed by the DHCP, “based on the degree of anticipated exposure”. PPE includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Gloves (exam, surgical, and heavy-duty utility gloves)
  2. Face Masks and Respirators
  3. Eye Protection (Face Shields & Safety Eyewear)
  4. Gowns (disposable or reusable)
