This lecture is designed for the orthodontist who wishes to supplement his/her knowledge and skills pertaining to the treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate. The focus is on orthodontic treatment in the context of an interactive coordinated team approach to care with the goal of encouraging community orthodontists to work with their cleft/craniofacial teams. The lecture will focus on important modifications to the sequence and timing of interventions that are unique and critical to patients with clefts and provide the community orthodontist with the knowledge and confidence to treat these patients.

Learning Objectives:
• Describe principles of teamwork and interdisciplinary interaction for optimal patient management, successfully interact with specialists in different fields of health care, and appropriately refer patients.

• Describe the treatment timeline from birth to adulthood and describe the Presurgical, Phase I, and Phase II orthodontic treatment protocols in the management of cleft lip and palate.

• Describe the goals of Phase I orthodontic treatment in preparation for secondary alveolar bone grafting and Phase II orthodontic treatment.

 

Biography:

Dr. Snehlata (Sneha) Oberoi is the Director of the Cleft and Craniofacial Orthodontic Program at UCSF. She is a craniofacial orthodontist with the Craniofacial Center, where she provides assessment and treatment recommendations for children with craniofacial anomalies. She also has
a robust faculty practice at the UCSF Orthodontic Clinic, where she treats these children. Dr. Oberoi is a Professor at the UCSF School of Dentistry and provides teaching and supervision of orthodontic residents. She is also the Pre-doctoral Program Director.

Dr. Oberoi has published over 70 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, as well as two book chapters. She also serves as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals. She is an invited speaker nationally and internationally. Most recently, she was an invited speaker at the 2019 AAO Annual session and is speaking in August 2022 at the Graduate Resident Orthodontic Program (GORP) in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Dr. Oberoi is a Board member of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, and the Northern California Angle Society. She is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the World Federation of Orthodontists, and the Indian Orthodontic Society.
