Your Chance to Vote on Important Member Issues

Dear SCCDS members,

As required by our Bylaws, you will be voting on two issues at the Thursday, September 13 general membership meeting: you will vote for 2019 society leaders and a new CDA Trustee, and on several Bylaws changes. The September 13 meeting is at Villa Ragusa event center, 35 S. Second Street, Campbell. The meeting begins with cocktails at 6, dinner at 7 and the business meeting about 7:20 pm. A quorum of 200 members is required to vote on 2019 Society leaders, choose between two candidates for CDA Trustee, and approve Bylaws changes proposed by the Board of Directors.

Approval of 2019 Society leaders:
Your Nominating Committee has nominated the following to the 2019 Executive Committee:
  • Dr. Baokhanh Nguyen, President-elect
  • Dr. Bexter Yang, Treasurer
  • Dr. Shakalpi Pendurkar, Secretary
  • Dr. Robert Shorey, Editor
  • Dr. Niloofar Zarkesh will be 2019 President and Dr. Ned Nix will be 2019 Immediate Past President
  • Drs. Hieu Dang, Sara Hamed, Nima Massoomi and John Shen have been nominated for three-year Board Member-at-Large positions.
Voting for CDA Trustee
Dr. Nava Fathi will complete her maximum two three-year terms as Trustee to the CDA Board of Trustees from SCCDS.  We have two candidates vying to replace her: Drs. John Pisacane and Julia Townsend. Their messages are available by clicking the buttons below.

These messages will also be published in the September issue of The Cutting Edge which you will receive in late August. The candidates will speak before you September 13.
Bylaws changes
Your Bylaws and Governance Policies Review Committee, a standing committee of the Board, periodically reviews the Bylaws for consistency with corporations law and when circumstances indicate the need to re-look at them. Two major issues arose this year:
A major proposed change is to have Trustees to the California Dental Association Board of Trustees (we send two) nominated by the SCCDS Board of Directors, rather than the Nominating Committee, but with the general membership at a general membership meeting voting to ratify the selection. The rationale for this change is that the Board members are the most likely to know those who have served our Society well and are well-qualified to serve as Trustee.
Another change loosens the timing requirements for the Nominating Committee to select nominees for Board positions. The current timeline calls for the Nominating Committee to select board and Executive Committee candidates in February, announce them to the membership in April and May, with an election at the September general membership meeting. This has proven to be restrictive, so the proposed change is for the election to be no later than the November general membership meeting, thus allowing the Nominating Committee more time if needed to announce candidates by September.
There are more minor changes to duties of officers, including the Executive Director as a non-voting participant on the Board and Executive Committee, etc.
The Bylaws with changes indicated are available by clicking the button below.
