SUMMARY:General Membership Meeting: The Influence of Prosthetic Designs on Peri-implant Tissue Health
DESCRIPTION:There has been a significant increase in the prevalence of dental implants. Despite the effectiveness of dental implants\, there have been an increasing number of patients presenting with peri-implant bone loss. While the etiologies of peri-implant bone loss are multifactorial\, a growing body of evidence suggests substantial connections between the state of peri-implant health and the design characteristics of the implant suprastructures in the persistent presence of oral biofilm. Implant positioning and prosthetic designs have been suggested to play a significant role in influencing the peri-implant marginal bone level. Without an optimal strategy to manage these prosthetic designs and implant suprastructures\, the risk of peri-implant bone loss may escalate\, potentially leading to unfavorable outcomes like peri-implantitis. \nBy the completion of this course each participant should be able to: \n1. Understand the principles of ideal implant positioning. \n2. Recognize the influence of prosthetic designs on peri-implant health. \n3. Analyze the relationship between implant positioning and compensatory prosthetic designs\, highlighting the biological implications of non-ideal prosthetic designs on peri-implant soft and hard tissue stability. \nBiography: \nDr. Guo-Hao (Alex) Lin\, DDS\, MS\, is a Diplomate and examiner of the American Board of Periodontology (board certified periodontist) and an ITI Fellow. Currently he is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Postgraduate Periodontics Program at the University of California\, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Lin is a recipient of several awards from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). He has published more than 90 research articles in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to several book chapters. His research focuses on evidence-based dentistry and implant-related clinical trials.

DESCRIPTION:The All-on-Digital® concept provides a fully digital workflow for the fabrication of full-arch implant-supported prostheses. This lecture will review the integration of photogrammetry with intraoral scanning (IOS) to capture and merge implant\, soft-tissue\, and restorative data for the design and fabrication of implant-supported full-arch restorations. \nThrough lecture and clinical case presentations\, participants will be guided through the clinical and laboratory steps of the All-on-Digital® workflow\, from data acquisition and digital design to the milling or printing of an immediate provisional restoration and fabrication of the definitive prosthesis. Clinical applications\, laboratory considerations\, advantages\, limitations\, and potential sources of error will be discussed. \nUpon completion of this course\, participants should be able to: \n\nDescribe the principles of photogrammetry and intraoral scanning (IOS) as they apply to full-arch implant-supported prostheses.\nIdentify the clinical and laboratory steps required to acquire\, merge\, and utilize digital data for the All-on-Digital® workflow.\nExplain the digital design and fabrication process for milled or printed provisional restorations and definitive full-arch implant prostheses.\nEvaluate the indications\, advantages\, limitations\, and potential sources of error associated with a fully digital full-arch implant restorative workflow.\n\nBiography: \nDr. Periklis Proussaefs is a prosthodontist and implant dentistry specialist\, Founder and Director of the California Institute of Dental Education\, and maintains a private practice limited to implant and prosthetic dentistry at Pacific Coast Implant Center in Ventura\, California. He serves as an Associate Professor at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry and has authored or co-authored more than 55 peer-reviewed scientific publications\, with a particular emphasis on implant dentistry\, bone grafting\, and prosthetic rehabilitation. His academic work has received numerous distinctions\, including the Judson C. Hickey Scientific Writing Award from the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry on two occasions\, the Tylman Research Award from the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics\, and the Robert James Achievement Award from Loma Linda University. Dr. Proussaefs has developed and contributed to numerous surgical\, prosthetic\, and digital implant treatment techniques and has lectured extensively on implant dentistry\, prosthodontics\, bone grafting\, digital workflows\, and sedation. DESCRIPTION:Biography: \nDr. Roberts has performed hospital dentistry and surgery at Stanford University Medical Center and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital since 1995. He is also on the faculty at University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. He treats a variety of oral and maxillofacial conditions\, including dental trauma and infection\, dental implant and restorative reconstruction\, surgical tooth extraction\, bone and tissue grafting\, conventional and surgical endodontic procedures\, dental oncology care of cancer patients\, as well as orofacial pain treatment. \nHe has presented CME lectures and Grand Rounds to numerous Departments at Stanford\, as well as teaching Residents and Fellows at Stanford Medical School and the Palo Alto VA. He also lectures in the Physician Assistant Program at Stanford. \nDuring his nearly a quarter of a century of military service\, he was one of the leading researchers on combat trauma and the pathophysiology of projectile wounds. He currently serves as a member of the Council on Peer with the California Dental Association and is an Anesthesia Evaluator for the California State Dental Board. Dr. Roberts is frequently asked to speak on a variety of topics to organizations both in the US and internationally.

His main emphasis is improving overall health through education and prevention in a multidisciplinary approach. Lectures nationally and internationally with contributions in over 40 journal articles and 6 book chapters. \nDr. Wong received his DDS from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry\, completed his AEGD residency from his alma mater and received his EdD from the Benerd School of Education\, Stockton. \nHe is Global Clinical Advisor for Special Olympics Special Smiles program\, President\, American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD)\, International Association of Dental Oral Health (iADH)’s International Advisory Committee and Education Committee member\, San Francisco Dental Society Dental Health Committee Chair and California Dental Association Foundation\, Secretary. \nDr. Wong is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists\, International College of Dentists\, Pierre Fauchard Academy\, Academy Dentistry International\, American Association of Hospital Dentists and a Diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry. \nAwards include: Arthur A. DESCRIPTION:While most of your patients’ pains will be from the teeth\, periodontium\, or a temporomandibular disorder\, some will have pain for other reasons: sinusitis\, referred pain\, neuralgias (trigeminal neuralgia\, burning mouth syndrome\, etc)\, and headaches\, to name a few. \nDentists are not expected to treat all of these but because they can sometimes look like dental pain or TMD\, dentists should still be able to recognize them. \nThis course will help you tell which of the above categories of pain (and a few more) your patient is suffering from\, when it’s not already clear. That determination will help you decide whether to treat the pain yourself\, or refer it out to the appropriate specialist. \nObjectives: \n\nDifferentiate between pain caused by teeth\, periodontium\, TMD\, sinusitis\, referred pain\, neuralgias (trigeminal neuralgia\, burning mouth syndrome\, etc)\, and headaches\nKnow when\, and to whom\, non-dental pains should be referred\n\n  \nBiography: \nAndrew Young received his DDS from UCSF\, his GPR certificate from the VA\, and his MSD in Orofacial Pain from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain and the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine\, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. He is an Associate Professor with Tenure at UOP\, where he is the director of orofacial pain. He also heads UOP’s Evidence-Based Decision-Making and Critical Thinking curriculum\, which teaches appraisal of the scientific literature. He has published over 50 review and original research articles in peer-reviewed journals. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Description \nThis case-based course provides general dentists with practical strategies to prevent\, recognize\, and manage complications during pulpectomy\, nonsurgical root canal treatment\, and retreatment. It covers six major categories: perforations\, instrument separation\, sodium hypochlorite accidents\, subcutaneous emphysema\, intracanal material extrusion\, and thermal injuries. Clinical cases highlight anatomical and procedural risks\, prognostic factors\, and potential harm to adjacent tissues and structures. This course emphasizes patient safety\, early recognition and initial management\, clear disclosure\, documentation\, follow-up\, and timely specialist consultation or urgent medical evaluation. \nEducational Objectives \nBy the completion of this course\, each participant should be able to: \n\nIdentify anatomical and procedural risks and select appropriate preventive measures.\nRecognize major endodontic complications and assess their potential consequences.\nFormulate a response that includes initial management\, disclosure\, documentation\, follow-up\, and timely referral.\n\nBiography: \nTakashi Komabayashi\, DDS\, MDS\, PhD\, is an active-duty U.S. Army officer\, board-certified endodontist\, professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Postgraduate Dental College\, and consultant to the Postgraduate Endodontic Program at Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare Systems. He has nearly 30 years of clinical and research experience\, nearly 20 years in endodontic education\, and 75 peer-reviewed publications. He earned dental degrees from Hiroshima University (1998) and UCSF (2005)\, a PhD in dental biomaterials from Tokyo Medical and Dental University (2002)\, an endodontic certificate and master’s degree from the University of Connecticut (2008)\, and an MS in Clinical Science from UT Southwestern (2011). His previous faculty appointments include Texas A&M University (2008–2012)\, West Virginia University (2012–2015)\, the University of New England (2015–2022)\, and UNC–Chapel Hill (2022–2025). He is a Fellow of both the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. \n  \n
